After attempting a world flight, and ditching over the pacific, the lone female pilot finds herself amidst feral beings stalking her in the shadows of Bikini Atoll, a radioactive island. These beings telepathically manipulate her thoughts and movement; generating a deranged dance as she battles to gain control of her wits. “Save Your Self” is the first episode directed by Craig Baurley in a series entitled “Queen of the Sky, A Demon Ballet”. Anne-Marie Talmage (America’s Got Talent, Diavolo) combines her highly athletic movement practices with choreographic support by Lydia Purves-Ware. Joe Kaplan composed the equally virtuosic score with Cellist April Guthrie and Violist/ Violinist Lauren Baba. Livya Howard-Yashar lends her voice to breathe life into the creatures and performance. Official Selection of the 2020 Dance Camera West program in Los Angeles
A story of two dancers discovering a partnership through space and time results in a wild visually spectacular clash of worlds and wit. Filmmaker Craig Baurley takes a new approach to visual effects; utilizing the talents of off-screen performers to directly enhance on-screen talent. The movement combines concepts of contact improvisation dance, gymnastics, slapstick, martial arts and partnering to arrive at a unique form of storytelling. Setting the scene is a mysterious wormhole that rips their worlds apart and intertwines them into a surrealistic dance floor. In keeping with the surreal world, the score, by composer Joseph Kaplan, features cellist April Guthrie accompanied by unusual sounds gathered during the foley process for the film such as dry-ice, sheet metal, sticks of rebar and rolled up rugs dropping on the floor.
